SUMMARY:

This dissertation proposes an action-research study aimed at promoting philosophical inquiry through the encouragement of supplementary readers. The study will be carried out in an elementary school. To this end, the work seeks to rethink ways of teaching philosophy while taking into account the other stages of basic education. The research is guided by the following question: What is the contribution of philosophy teaching to reading and to philosophical inquiry among fifth-grade elementary students? The hypothesis advances along two lines: (1) drawing on Lipman’s research, we can affirm that philosophical inquiry has a profound effect on the development of critical and inventive thinking in children, with the reading of diverse texts being one of the most interesting forms of experience for philosophical work at this age; and (2) following Paulo Freire, we insist on the fundamental role of critical literacy as a means of realizing emancipatory education. In light of this hypothesis, we draw on a previously developed project—Carroteca, which sought to encourage reading among elementary school children—and, from it, develop critical reading through philosophical investigations of the texts read. Apart from the introduction and conclusion, the work is divided into four chapters. The second chapter, based on Lipman, presents the importance of philosophy in childhood, the notions of wonder and meaning, and the concept of the community of inquiry. The third chapter offers a reading of Paulo Freire’s texts, such as “The Importance of the Act of Reading” and Education as the Practice of Freedom, to develop the idea of how philosophy teaching contributes to fostering reading for learning, citizenship, and emancipation. The fourth chapter presents the Carroteca project as a method for teaching philosophy through the reading of literary texts, summarizing how the project unfolded and reporting its results.
