SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates the potential of the board game as a pedagogical tool to intensify student engagement in Philosophy classes and, at the same time, to enhance the teaching–learning process. Anchored in the hypothesis that the game—as a ludic activity endowed with intrinsic value—and the adoption of this ludic character in pedagogical practices can stimulate students’ intrinsic motivation, the research draws on three theoretical frameworks: Bernard Suits’s conception of games, which emphasizes the autotelic character of play and argues that its suitability for pedagogical ends can yield significant results; the formulations on gamification by Karl Kapp and Raul Busarello, which guide the incorporation of game mechanics, dynamics, and aesthetics to promote engagement in activities that are not originally games; and the perspectives of Mário Ariel González Porta, which advocate a problem-centered approach to the teaching of Philosophy—a departure from the traditional model of mere conceptual reproduction that creates room for the application of ludic and gamified experiences in philosophical education. Based on these references, the investigation proposes, through an action research design, to design, prototype, and implement in a school context an instructional board game that deliberately implements Suits’s theoretical elements and the gamification strategies indicated by Kapp and Busarello, while operationalizing the problem-centered teaching practices proposed by Porta. The evaluation will focus on the prototype’s effect on engagement and on the development of philosophical competencies, as well as discuss its pedagogical implications and possibilities for scalability.
