SUMMARY:

Brazilian education has undergone a series of modications throughout history, starting with the arrival of the Jesuits with the traditional teaching model, developing with the New School movements, passing through the technical school, until reaching its current model based on the Critical Social Content pedagogy. Among the main changes that secondary education has undergone over the years, we can highlight the one brought about by Law No. 13,415/2017, which implemented the New Secondary Education. The general objective of this work is to develop a proposal for an elective course with support material, based on the use of chess as a didactic resource for teaching mathematics, contributing to teachers working in the New High School. This is a study that is characterized as bibliographical research, where books, theses, dissertations, articles and search sites were used, such as Google Scholar and PROFMAT Dissertation Repository, using the keywords: "Elective proposals, mathematics through chess, history of chess, legal milestones for the implementation of the New High School", among others. As a result of the research, it was possible to create an elective course for implementation in the elective catalog of the Ceará State Department of Education (Seduc), as well as the creation of a booklet that will serve as support material for the teacher who will teach the presented elective. It is expected that the booklet presented will spark interest in students, through the implementation of more playful approaches. It is therefore concluded that the use of chess as an active methodology for teaching mathematics can be a valuable tool, combined with a good contextualization of the teacher.
